One leak isn't a repipe. A pattern is. Here's what tends to mean the pipe itself — not just a fitting — is reaching the end of the road.
Recurring or pinhole leaks
One leak is a repair. Leak after leak — especially pinhole leaks that keep popping up in different spots — is the classic sign the pipe itself is failing, not just a fitting.
Rusty, brown, or discolored water
Brown or orange-tinted water, or a metallic taste, usually points to galvanized steel pipe corroding from the inside — a near-certain repipe candidate in a home old enough to still have it.
Low pressure throughout the house
When pressure drops everywhere — not just at one fixture — internal corrosion and scale are narrowing the pipes, metal lines closing up from the inside over decades.
Galvanized or polybutylene pipe
Sometimes the material itself is the trigger. If your home still has galvanized steel or polybutylene, it's living on borrowed time regardless of symptoms — more on both below.
A 30-second test for galvanized pipe
Want to know what you've got? Find an exposed supply pipe (often near the water heater). Galvanized steel is dull gray, a magnet sticks to it, and scratching the surface shows silvery-gray metal underneath. Copper is copper-colored and non-magnetic; polybutylene is gray (sometimes blue or black) flexible plastic, often stamped "PB2110." A home can be partly repiped already, so a licensed plumber confirms what's really in the walls.

Why repipes are common in Peoria
It's the same forces that age every pipe in town, concentrated. The City of Peoria reports its tap water at about 13 grains per gallon from the Greenway plant and 17 from Pyramid Peak (wells run 2 to 8) — "very hard," well above the USGS threshold — and the surface water is chloraminated. Put that through 1970s-era pipe and you get the repipe window.
Hard water corrodes and scales from within

Galvanized steel

Copper

Polybutylene
Gray (sometimes blue or black) flexible plastic used roughly 1978 to 1995 and marketed as the pipe of the future. Then it turned out chlorine and chloramine oxidize it from the inside, making it brittle until it fractures and leaks — often with no outward warning. It was pulled from U.S. building codes after one of the largest class-action settlements in the country's history, and many insurers now decline or limit coverage on homes that still have it. If you've got polybutylene, it's widely considered a repipe waiting to happen.
The replacement
Choosing the new pipe: PEX, copper, or CPVC
There's no single "best" pipe — the right choice depends on your home and your water, and the licensed plumber recommends and installs it. Here's the honest comparison.
PEX
Cross-linked polyethylene, now the most common repipe material. Flexible, so it bends around corners with fewer fittings (fewer potential leak points), corrosion-resistant, and less prone to scale than metal — a real advantage in Peoria's hard water. Commonly cited at about 25 to 50 years. It's for indoor use; sunlight degrades it.
Copper
A long track record and 50-plus years of life, fire-resistant and rigid. The caveat is the same hard-water pitting that ages it in the first place, and it's slower and more labor-intensive to install. Still an excellent pipe — with eyes open about the water.
CPVC
A rigid plastic that resists corrosion and handles hot water — a valid option, though PEX and copper are what most modern repipes here use.
