Galvanized steel is dull gray, a magnet sticks to it, and scratching the surface shows silvery-gray metal underneath. Copper is copper-colored and non-magnetic; polybutylene is gray (sometimes blue or black) flexible plastic, often stamped "PB2110." A home can be partly repiped already, so a licensed plumber confirms what's really in the walls.
